How It All Started
Our founder, Zach Feyerherm, has 14 years of experience in this industry, from the logistics of moving freight to the business side of managing a transportation brokerage. Throughout that time, he noticed a few things that didn’t sit right with him but seem to be standard for the industry. One major root issue is that the other people involved in the shipping process are treated more like numbers than like human beings.
The process of shipping can often be chaotic in nature, but the effort put in by brokerages to anticipate issues, communicate adjustments, and be a calming presence is reflected by this perspective that money is the most important thing. Meaning: There isn’t much effort given, so long as the brokerage is still turning a profit.
Our “Why”
Now, calling out this wrongful philosophy isn’t saying that all the people working at other transportation brokerages are just Scrooge McDucks, counting their dollar bills and laughing at the frustration of others when complications arise – that’s not true at all. There are so many great people in this industry who want to do right by everyone they interact with, but a company’s culture heavily influences how much good someone can do.
When your boss is breathing down your neck about how much time you spent talking to drivers and clients about a delay, that impacts how much positive influence the brokerage can be in any given situation. This is why Sparrow was started. We believe that the transportation industry should be doing better by our customers, vendors, and employees.
