Below, we go over what full truckload shipping is, the benefits it offers and how partnering with a freight broker like Sparrow Logistics can end up saving you both time and money!

Full truckload (FTL) shipping: What is it?

So, what exactly is full truckload shipping? A full truckload shipment is when the shipper contracts an entire truck for direct point-to-point service. Truckload shipments are priced per mile within designated lanes, taking the size of the shipment provided it fits (weight, dimensions) into consideration. This type of truckload is a mode of freight for larger shipments that utilize 50% or more capacity of a 48’ or 53’ trailer.

Benefits of FTL shipping:

  • Faster delivery – Your delivery generally arrives quicker to the drop-off destination because the carrier does not need to stop and pick up other loads to fill the truck.

  • Reduced handling – There is a reduced chance of damaged goods because the shipment is unloaded or moved less than LTL shipments.

  • Cost-effective rates – If the shipment can utilize the entire space of the trailer, the cost could be more effective than booking multiple LTL shipments.

  • Tracking – The estimated arrival you see in your transport management system (TMS) will not be delayed because of multiple stops.

Types of truckload equipment:

  • Dry van: These trailers typically are used to transport goods that are not temperature-sensitive

  • Flatbed: This type of open trailer is used for large shipments that will not fit through trailer doors.

  • Step deck trailer: Also referred to as drop decks, these trailers are similar to flatbeds but can accommodate height restrictions while transporting.

  • Removable gooseneck (RGN) trailer: This is a popular choice due to the detachable front that allows the trailer to be dropped to the ground to create a ramp for loading from the ground and is able to accommodate taller pieces of equipment than standard step deck.

  • Refrigerated: This kind of trailer is for transporting goods that require a specific temperature.

Determining the cost of FTL freight shipping:

Full truckload shipping rates vary depending on your needs. Things like mileage, availability, time of year and fuel costs are all things that can factor into pricing. These factors and the type of trailer you need will also affect your shipping costs. Based on the goods you are looking to move, our team at Sparrow Logistics will identify which trailer is required and the cost associated with accomplishing your needs.
